A walk in the garden

The rain has moved on, the sun is shining (it's hot and humid...), and I finally organized the back patio. Got rid of the empty pots and swept up the collected leaves. The grill is going away this weekend, I have decided. Takes up too much room, and we don't use it. No big loss, it was given to us by Mike (formerly of Unit #5) when he moved out to Tennessee last January. I want my patio back.

My garden has exploded with all the rain. Finally got out there and pulled a couple weeds (not that many overall, even with the birds flinging seed everywhere), picked some lettuce to have with lunch, and marveled at how much things grew, seemingly overnight. Beans are getting flowers on them, I have strawberries starting, and the cucumbers have settled into their new homes quite well. I will trellis them next weekend, I think. Still pretty small at this point.

Comparing to last year, though, I definitely have some changes. Last year at this point, my peas were over 5' tall. This year, even with two plantings, I have 4 pea plants, straggly and pathetic, not even 2' long. This is the last time I buy seeds from anywhere other than Johnny's or Botanical Interests. Everything else is about where it needs to be. My nasturtiums are even a bit ahead, thanks to them being mostly volunteer.

Off to work now, to work in other gardens and check on the baby robins...

The Thunder Rolls...

And rolls, and rolls, around and around the lake. Beautiful morning, beautiful afternoon, schizophrenic skies from about 3:00 onward. I am sitting here, at work, punched out, because I can't see more than 5 feet past the back glass doors of the office. I'm not leaving till it slows down a bit. Today, of all days, I forgot my raincoat at home, and didn't bother going back to get it at lunch. At least we don't have to water things, and the irrigation pond is refilling as I type... Love the thunder and lightning, though, when I can watch it from safe inside.

The baby birdies were awake more today, and begging for food at every opportunity. I am amazed at how huge they've gotten since Friday! Hopefully mama is sitting over them now, wings spread and streaming water away from her poor downy-feathered babies. Their eyes aren't open yet, but I can see the beginnings of real feathers starting to grow...

Edit, 6:38 PM: Oh, and now there's hail. That's just fantastic... /sarcasm
