Sunrises and Sunsets
Dec. 4th, 2008 06:05 pmThe problem with sunrises, as beautiful as they are, and I do enjoy seeing them, is that they happen so darned early in the morning. As early as it was, though, I'm glad I saw this one, because it's as pretty as the day got. Golden light reflected off Long Lake and refracted through the light fog rising off the water really was beautiful. ( photo notes: )
Dragged myself out of bed at ohmygodthirty, made it into work by 6, left at 6:10, woke up at 7:00. guh. Did better than my co-worker Ben, who set his alarm for 5 PM. We three (Boss, Dave, myself) left without him... he caught up.
More snow fell in Bridgton than did here the other night; it was still frozen all over the ground, and the road to the property was pretty much black ice for most of the way. Fun.
13 big hemlocks off the truck, set on the ground by 8:00. 4 sitting upright in their holes, burlap and rope cleared away by 8:45 (thank goodness for machinery). The guys and I are feeling pretty good with the timing, things are going well. Boss says "If we're done by 12, you can all have the rest of the day off with pay." INCREASED MOTIVATION, CHECK. We decided, looking at our watches/cell phones, and taking into account what we'd already done, that this was certainly do-able, and informed Joe that he was now working for us, and yes, we would be done and back to the shop by 12. Headed to the other side of the property to plant 7 more trees.
It might have happened, too, had he not hit the septic system with the excavator on the 3rd hole... We didn't think he had, that it was just a bunch of junk that got mixed with the fill that housing contractors like to use to make grade... We were ready to move on, plant the trees, be done by noon. I had to take a look in the 2nd hole, though, and say "um, what's that pipe, there?" Cursing followed. Much like the Dwarves, he dug too fast and too deep... found something that could have been much, much worse than a Balrog if the house had been finished and lived in.
Repairs were made, lunch was eaten here and there, we were not done by noon... But we finished. We do not have to go back tomorrow.
Came home, and am now well pruneified and relaxed, thanks to a lovely soak in the tub with lots of bubbles. I had brought my last Peppermint Frappuccino with me (considered a nice glass of wine, but that would have required going to the store...), and a book, and partook of neither, as I napped for about an hour. Missed the sunset, but I'm sure it was nowhere near as spectacular as the sunrise, as a light rain (which will either continue and freeze or continue, freeze, and then turn to snow, neither of which is very conducive to vehicular travel) had started falling... There will be no province meeting for me tonight. I will make turkey soup instead.
