Son of Squidgy
Apr. 27th, 2009 10:33 pmWe have a new pet in the house; a Pseudoscorpion. Noticed it crawling around on the bathroom ceiling this evening. Itty bitty teeny weeny li'l thing, 2mm long at the most, with pincers double the size of its body. They're terribly helpful little arachinids; they eat all kinds of pests, including clothes moth larvae, bedbugs (eeew...), and will take on flies many times their size, even houseflies. I'll keep him around.
Found one last year, in the same relative situation, though it was much larger (maybe 3/16" long... looked huge, dangit.), and looked much more like a deer tick with GIANT PINCERS. I'm a bit ashamed to say that my initial reaction was AAAAAAAAAAAHHHOhGodOhGodKillItKillItKILLITBeforeItEatsUsALL but let me get a picture of it first, so we can figure out what the heck it is afterward, and see if we actually needed to kill it. I made
kurlon take care of that one... later identification revealed that we really should have left it alone, it was harmless, oh well too late now. The universe has apparently forgiven us, and allowed another into our home to maybe take care of some of the little black gnats that live in my houseplants.
And this is cool... further investigation tonight reveals that they often hitch rides on larger bugs, a practice called Phoresy. Awww... Lookit 'im. Holding on to that giant antenna for dear life on a surely terrifying journey...
