Just the last two days, really, have been the exciting and interesting ones... Sunday was awful and rainy, we closed work early, which was nice. Let me finish a couple projects without interruption. Monday, one of our cashiers quit. Bah. Not even a week after one of our other cashiers/plant people got kicked out of her house and had to go back and live with her mom. BAH. The same day, though, Monday, we got a call from a gal who needed a job, and she's now working for us, and is awesome. So that's good.

Yesterday was entertaining, if nothing else. Discovered on Tuesday morning that since I had pulled the main stems of sumac out of the garden, that gave the smaller running roots free reign to wake up and send up alllll kinds of sprouts. At least they're easy to see, and shallow, so out they come! Pulled a bunch Wednesday morning, got raspberry thorns stuck in my fingers, ow ow ow. Got to work, and was immediately set upon one after another by two of my least favorite customers... needy... whiny... sigh. Not a great way to start the morning. Later that day got more interesting; bossman was walking around with a very, very tall gentleman, his wife, and one of the local construction foremen. The very tall gentleman turned out to be Dave Cowens, who apparently lives just up the road a piece, and for whom we are doing a good sized landscape job. A brush with celebrity... He's a real down-to-earth sort of guy, very nice. I think will be easy to work with. Pretty cool.

Sad part of Wednesday came when one of my favorite customers stopped by just after lunch, to tell me goodbye. She and her husband were headed back to Wisconsin, since he was now retired. :( We met either the first or second summer I was at the nursery; they'd just moved out here, and I noticed the Bucky Badger sticker on her van. We talked. I listened, enjoying her wonderful Wisconsin accent. Reminded me of my family, who I don't see nearly often enough. When J and I were scouting places to have our wedding ceremony a few years ago, at Portland Head, she and her husband were there, walking along the path. I called out, "HI M!", they came over, had a wonderful time talking with our families, and it turns out my dad and her husband lived very close together, many many years ago. Small world. Pretty neat. Wonderful, wonderful people. Yesterday she said to me "nobody will ever again tell me my accent is beautiful". I told her to not ever forget that it was. I nearly cried. The bonds formed over a garden are really something. There are a few customers that I will truly miss, and they're two of them.

Today was rainy and slow, again. Got to play in the greenhouse a little bit, build some windowboxes for a lady. Had dropped off my car for new tires this morning, got a call waaaay too early for them to be done, which scared me, but it was just a tie rod that needed replacing... I think I had the other one done when I got tires the last time. The new tires make my car happy. They're quiet, smooth riding, and should last a little bit longer than the last set.

Looking forward to tomorrow, my one day off. Weather is supposed to be beautiful. I have a Plan for the gardens. It involves weed killer (for the pathway), compost (for the beds - ohgod do they need *something*), and weed barrier cloth (to go over the whole thing, and maybe starve out at least some of the sumac and raspberries). I intend to dig out the barberry and put a giant hosta in its place, which will be an incredible improvement. Perhaps will be able to plant the cutleaf coneflower as well. I think I have the spot picked out. We shall see how it goes.
