GNEW Recap - Yup, It was an Event

Friday morning dawned bright and clear, fortunately not too early... people were arriving, stuff was happening, it was Friday of War!
I spent Friday morning puttering in camp, finishing up the A&S stuff I had to do, dropped off some forms and embroidery kits at Info Point, hung a few signs and schedule corrections here and there... organized the music for the ball... had a leisurely lunch with Mickel, did some more puttering, and then headed off for my usual afternoon gate shift at 2:00. Saw lots of lovely people, had a great time with the other ladies on my shift, we handled the rushes that came in waves no problem.
6:00 was time for Mickel's pre-ball dance class, for which I played recorder. Smaller class than usual, I think, but everybody had fun. Max and Twig showed up at just the right time with dinner, too. Yay! The ball started pretty close to on time, I played, I danced, I had a wonderful evening, never short a dance partner. It was a fabulous ball. I am so happy to know Xavier, Cynan, Thomas, and other guys who are so lovely to dance with! We cut the third set a little bit short, because there was some more DOOM coming in on the radar. Got back to camp just in time; it started raining, and didn't stop till the next morning... Rain on canvas is a lovely sound, still... The tent got a little soggier than usual, since we moved it slightly. I have since figured out how to fix the door, both so what happened won't happen (hopefully) again, and so it will be easier to get in and out! Because right now, it's a royal pain... and I'm not even royalty.
Saturday was pretty good, overall. I need to remember to eat more. Got A&S set up, banners hung, signs with schedules up on posts, and since I was in the barn, people started coming by with their A&S displays... meh, early sign in, I suppose. Twig brought me some breakfast before I got too cranky and had a complete breakdown... food is good. Got to remember that. At 10:30 I was able to break away from the barn, since my lovely deputy
fairestyarrow and Asther came to my rescue, and took over the signing-in of displays. A bit more running around for me, some snacks, checking in with
anna_mickel and
ninian_vesalius, my wonderful afternoon shift ladies, and then grabbed my fencing gear and headed to the other end of camp.
The tourney had happened earlier in the morning, while I was in the barn. It sounded fun, but I'm not too sorry to have missed it... Field battle was pretty good (I still don't like RBGs), there was a short break, socialness with my wonderful fencer friends, lots of hanging out in the shade, and then a brief meeting before we headed into the woods. Wyatt called me up, in front of all the assembled fencers, and formally took me on as his Cadet. Makes me happy. It seems I can learn things from him, which will make me a better fencer. I hope so. We'll figure this thing out.
The woods were wonderful, as usual. I love running through trees with swords in my hands. We fight differently in the woods, I understand better how to work with smaller units and use terrain when there's something there, rather than a couple dozen people spread out all over a big flat field (hay bales just don't do it for me...). Being small enough to squeeze through trees helps too. I think I have a clumsy Don, though... twice, I took care of the people I was fighting, turned, and was just in time to see Wyatt tumbling over backwards falling off a log, or something... hrm... No injuries, at least. We had some free-fencing time after the woods, which was good.
Brief dip in the nice cooool poooool before court was what I needed, fortunately court was set a little behind, since Her Majesty was late getting to the site... We had the traditional snack of popsicles, fresh from the dry ice cooler, saw several well deserving people receive well deserved awards, and then court was done! Short, for GNEW... Congrats to Xavier and Isabel for being named alternates to the Pennsic Champions Team!! Congratulations to the usual suspects on the main team too... :)
We had 11 for dinner Saturday night, Max, Mickel, Ninian, Iain, Alianor, Nicholas, Twig, and I, being joined by the lovely Gormlaith and Edward, and Vincent. Twig had found and cooked a truly delicious period chicken/beef stew over the fire, and everybody had brought a nice variety of other foods. Still need to work on the vegetable portion of the meal...
marajade648 had even given me a beautiful squash, and it has come home with me... Post dinner, Iain and Twig and Alianor and I did dishes, while the rest of the group sat around the fire, and Gormlaith and Edward sang. More singing, more music, under the stars, by a bright fire. Can't ask for better.
The rest of the group wandered, I stayed behind with Max & Mickel & Twig... it was a quiet night. Visitors wandered by, Xavier stopped by for a while and sat and talked... Einarr and his current security staff popped in and made sure all of our alcohol was secure... It was a nice, easy evening.
Hated to say goodbye again to everyone on Sunday morning. The weekend always goes far too quickly.
Sunday packout went smoothly, and without sunburn. Home by 10PM, and so glad I had today off. I don't much want to return to work tomorrow, the pile of paperwork on my desk and in my inbox will not be a fun thing, I think... Only 3 weeks till Pennsic... I've got to get sewing and re-packing!
EDIT: Completely spaced this last night... it was late, I was tired. Here's a bunch of pictures of court, and dinner. I was too busy running around the rest of the day to do any photographing, but there's all kinds of other galleries out there! If anyone got good shots of the A&S display, point me at them? I didn't see much of it after I ran off to fencing, but what I did see was beautiful!!

Date: 2011-07-12 06:42 pm (UTC)According to what she'd heard/seen, some guy and some girl were having fun play-wrestling on Saturday night and that much alcohol was involved, and that she accidentally had hit him in the eye.
Well, Sunday morning, while I was up getting my vehicle, Katla says she saw the woman walk past the guy and out of nowhere he threw a punch, knocked her down, then kicked her while she was down, then walked away. I didn't see what happened myself; I only saw the crowd (including chirurgeons) around her and him saying "She's fine, I didn't hit her that hard."
I saw the Sheriff's Deputies arrive and take statements, and Katla was among the witnesses to give one.

Date: 2011-07-12 09:17 pm (UTC)Speaking of said toddler, I took her for a walk with me to go retrieve her mom's vehicle, to keep her away from the situation, which is why what I saw/heard was limited.
BIG-time kudos to the Seneschal for his handling of things. He must work in some kind of law-enforcement-related job in mundania. If not, he may wish to consider it.

Date: 2011-07-12 05:15 pm (UTC)When are you getting to Pennsic and do you want more then? No guarantees because it may be late for squash, but we may have tomatoes and peppers by then.
Some how I totally missed the cadeting. Came back to the field and saw you w/something blue...
Also sounds like I just missed seeing you in the pool too. At that point I was probably sunbathing in the middle of Sharc....

Date: 2011-07-12 06:56 pm (UTC)I was in the pool/pool area for a sum total of probably 5 minutes. Long enough to walk down, jump in, dunk my head and cool off, and get out again. There were kids being crazy, and being relatively small with no insulation at all, I cooled off after about 30 seconds of pool time. :)
