A Mock-up of Justice

felis_lupusFirst, some booteeful winterberries for you all. So pretty this year, thanks to all the rain...
Participated in the mock jury this morning, which was quite a lot of fun. I don't think actual jury duty is nearly that enjoyable... Case was presented by two very nice lawyers (seemed that way, anyhow... they are lawyers, after all), we 7 talked about it, reached a conclusion pretty quickly, and presented our results. Nice group of people I was with. The lawyers were quite surprised at how quickly we came to a resolution, without any additional questions. I'm not sure if that was a good thing or not, but looking at the evidence, the end verdict seemed pretty obvious. Talked it over, gave our reasoning, figured we were about done, rather early.
All well and good, we're feeling pretty happy with ourselves, and then the guy says, "well, we've got kind of a special treat for you all. The (person) who is bringing the suit against (x company) is here, and we're going to bring them in so they can get used to talking about the case in front of a bunch of people they've never met before." Even after we'd assured ourselves that we'd made the right decision, and that the case was viable, the reaction within the entire group was "WHA??? BUH! They're HERE? Ebbeeh!!" Commence panic on my mark...
It all turned out just fine. Calmness prevailed, we heard one side of the case from an actual participant, and it meshed with what we were seeing, not just with what we'd heard. I think everybody learned a few more things and what sorts of issues might pop up in the real trial, and everyone left feeling pretty good. Be interesting to see how it all turns out, if I remember what to look for.
