Snowy Friday
Originally uploaded by gshower7
Snow stopped around 2:00 this afternoon, just like the Weather Channel said it would, and we even saw the sun for a moment or two. I decided it was probably best to get the 2 storms' worth of snow/ice/ick off the front pathway before we got more... only took about an hour to shovel off the steps and walk, but I'm not going to suggest anybody actually use them... The rain we got with Tuesday evening's storm formed a beautiful crust, but also saturated the snow that had already fallen, resulting in not only heavy, mostly frozen snow chunks, but a lovely layer of ice underneath the whole thing. I think that's probably part of why the road is the way it is.

I have resigned myself to the fact that snow tires are in my future. In theory will be able to get away with spending ~$200, just getting fronts. Not till after Monday, though, so we'll have to hope our neighbor comes back and sands, otherwise I'll be working from home...

Headed out to mom & dad's shortly, in the reliable vehicle that will make it out of the road... Stop by Staples to get scrolls photocopied first, grab coffee & water bottles in the morning, then fence allll day. Yay! See (some of) y'all there!

...Lancelot has this uncanny ability to know when I'm planning on leaving, and decide to jump in my lap 5 minutes before then... cats...

In which I discover I am dumb. And have dumb luck, which saved me a spark show and a blown fuse or three.

Upon going outside with hubby, who Knows Things About Cars and What To Do With Them, to change out the battery, we discover not only did I hook up the battery jumper completely, utterly backwards (thanks to reading (very carefully and thoroughly) the wrong set of instructions), but the charger did absolutely nothing, thanks to my choice of "ground", which was a heavily painted section of frame. Dumb. But lucky, I suppose.

The battery is probably fine, will confirm with my trusted mechanic tomorrow, but I have a cracked terminal, which would account for the finicky starting that I had earlier today, and hopefully will be repaired tomorrow. Gah. Stoopid. If the battery is not fine, great, I just happen to have a brand-y new one. If it is, guess who is returning the (thankfully) unopened battery and getting her $100 back.

In house news, the bank is sending somebody out to assess the situation, and will be getting back to us by Wednesday. Hopefully J cleared enough snow/ice away from the lovely little flat spot today so that the rain didn't prompt yet another leak... They are also going to start pushing harder to get the lien cleared up so we can actually toss the many many trash bags we've been filling, and start really cleaning things. Ripping out carpets, putting in nice laminate floors, getting new appliances in there... I can't wait. :) Also have to fill oil tanks soon... which I can kinda wait for (at least the bill... owie), but we cannot skip that little detail. Should be able to last another two weeks or so on what is there.

Now, back to garb, as I have figured out how to adjust the pattern so I don't use *quite* so much fabric... eep.

Hope everyone had a lovely holiday; I enjoyed (and am still enjoying) several days off, played some key-tar on the Wii, and generally had a relaxing time.

Drove back home from my parents' this afternoon in time to make it to the auto shop so they could slap a new inspection sticker on my windshield [Finally. Danged blinker's been like that for 5 years, and it's suddenly a problem??? Argh. Fixed now, for good, $5.00 vs $75.00 repair, no more problems.], and saw the most amazing things on the Interstate.

First off, the Wonderful. The interstate/highways in New Hampshire have some of the most beautiful granite cliffs along the roads. This time of year, as the snow melts, it seeps through the rock, and comes out of whatever crack it can find, forming huge fountains of ice. Never seen anything to compare anywhere else. When the ice gets thick enough, either by virtue of minerals in the rock being transferred to it, or reflection of the sky, it turns a beautiful shade of, well, Ice Blue. I wish I had a photograph of it, but I always seem to be driving when it happens... and I'm not really one to pull over on a major highway unless I have to...

More Vehicular Contemplations. )

A final rant. Tolls... One of these days I am going to have to pick up a transpass/ezpass/whatever-the-heck-pass we're using, or I'm never going to have any money again. It costs me $7.60 in tolls if I want to take the interstate home and back. Holy Carp. I think the gas/time spent if I took back roads would be more costly, so it's still economical, but for heavens sake...

Home again, a few more relaxing days now, then New Years Party, then back to work... See everyone again in 2008!
