Spring Fresh Eggs
Apr. 24th, 2009 03:09 pm8 beautiful, freshly washed, straight-out-of-the-chicken eggs from the farm down the road a piece. Finally made it out there. After making a half dozen batches of pizzelle for the event tomorrow, I was out of eggs to bake a birthday cake for tonight. What better opportunity to go visiting than that!
I was greeted by a very overexuberant blue merle aussie (who put a few scratches in my door paint in his eagerness to say HI! NEW PERSON! I LOVE YOU!, but those will buff out, I think. Loves the puppy... one more reason to go visit and get eggs! eee!) and his boxer pal, called off by Mary, one of the ladies who works at the farm. She gave me a little tour after I mentioned I'd never been there before (what, never had fresh eggs? shame on you... city girl... ;) ), we talked a bit, and she sold me less than the usual dozen, as she'd just plucked 'em from under the chickens. Fantastic. I can use a half dozen eggs pretty regularly, but a dozen takes a bit more to go through if I don't have OMG cookies planned. Eggs, fresh butter, fresh cream, all on the honor system in a fridge in the barn (with all the friendly horses). There were grumpy notes which Mary was very apologetic for on the fridge door, as some people have apparently been taking advantage of said system... come on, people. $2 for a dozen eggs is too much?
kurlon, you will be happy to know that they have milk fresh out of the cow, also. Just have to bring your own containers. :)
In garden news, my peas are coming up. YAY! 2 weeks from planting to sprouts, but last year I didn't get them in till this week, so I think I'm actually two weeks ahead... Hoping to put the lettuce and carrots in this afternoon, if I get everything else done and can dig in the dirt a little bit. This guarantees we'll find a house to buy before too long. ;)
